The Last Continent
A downloadable Dialect Backdrop
The Last Continent is a new backdrop for the incredible game Dialect, from Thorny Games (Dialect is from Thorny Games, not this backdrop!). It places the isolation in the frozen snow and ice of Antarctica.
From the Introduction:
"This is the farthest one can go and still find shelter. A scattering of structures cling to the ice in a makeshift encampment, held together by sheer determination and whatever materials could be spared. Generators hum unevenly, their warmth seeping through small, shared rooms where supplies are scarce and comfort is a luxury. Above, an endless night drapes the land in darkness; below, the ice is layered with memories and secrets, as ancient as the earth itself."
I am always careful to leave the backdrop as open-ended and specifics-free as possible for maximum narrative flexibility like you find in the Core Backdrops. I create my backdrops first-and-foremost for my friends and I to play.
The inspiration for this backdrop came from a story about a group of scientists in Antarctica who's accents shifted during their time isolated together--read the story.
AI Disclaimer: I built and use a custom GPT to assist in developing my backdrops. It saves time in putting together a framework and first draft which I take and continue to develop with further prompting and my own editing (usually it's initial details are not great). Point being, I use AI, but it is far from a simple "give me a backdrop" followed by copy-paste. I also may use generative AI to create some assets in the artwork (but not the entire artwork), otherwise this would be way more than $5 or have crappy artwork.
